Charles Michel’s chair

Charles Michel’s chair

The shameful spectacle of the chair being denied to Ursula Von der Leyen was predictable. What can one expect in a country that has withdrawn from the “Istanbul Convention” a few days earlier? What the President of the European Commission experienced is little compared to the physical and moral violence to which the LGBT community, women, Erdogan’s opponents, and the Kurdish population are subjected every day in Turkey. Thus, while the Web tried to reconstruct the exchanges of e-mails between the members, who expressed their disdain for the unfortunate episode, 147 of the 497 defendants in the trial covering the failed coup in the summer of 2016 were inflicted very heavy sentences : 32 life sentences and sentences ranging from 6 to 16 years. But we know Erdogan. It was Charles Michel who fell short. Not only for the embarrassed and embarrassing look with which he looked up to der Leyen, but because he did not have the courage to speak out and send Erdogan a loud and clear message. Perhaps those who lack courage should not be the President of the European Council.
